DADS! I SEE YOU! International Fathers Mental Health Day - June 22nd 2020

First of all, I just wanted to wish all fathers, father figures, fathers-to-be, a very Happy Fathers Day! Although I usually direct most of my content towards our brave mamas, I just wanted to let you know that I see you and all that you do to support your children and families.

Did you know that about 10% new dads experience paternal postpartum depression? On Monday June 22nd 2020 we recognize globally as International Fathers Mental Health Day!

What does this mean?

It means, its time that we address the mental health challenges and stigma that men and fathers face if they’re vocal about difficulties in early parenthood. Society often view men as self-sacrificing and strong which has contributed to about 43% of new fathers viewing postpartum depression and anxiety as a sign of weakness (Centre for Perinatal Psychology).  When men do not feel confident in their ability to be that strong backbone within their family, they are less likely to admit that they need support or seek help. Men are also three times more likely to commit suicide which means it is imperative that we strongly encourage dads to advocate for their mental health and support if they’re experiencing distress adjusting to parenthood (Centre for Perinatal Psychology).

Wondering what symptoms men experience?

  • increase in anger & conflict with others

  • increase usage of alcohol or prescription/recreational drugs

  • frustration or irritability

  • isolation from family and friends

  • impulsivity

  • conflict between how you feel you should be as a man

  • thoughts of suicide or death

Risk factors for developing postpartum depression include:

  • maternal depression ( 10% can increase to 50% chance of developing PPD if the mother has postpartum depression)

  • difficulty developing an attachment with the baby

  • lack of a good male role model

  • feeling excluded and jealous over mother-child bonding

  • financial and work stress

  • Low testosterone
