Let’s Spill the tea!

There are many controversial topics that come to mind during all stages of pregnancy and postpartum. Choosing whether or not to indulge in small amounts of herbal and/or non-herbal teas during pregnancy can be quite the predicament. Herbal teas consist of little to no caffeine, where as black tea contains about 50 mg per cup and green tea contains about 30-50 mg per cup.

Why is this important you might ask?

During pregnancy, teas can help you stay hydrated, alleviate morning sickness, they consist of many antioxidants and nutrients, various teas can also help prepare your body for labour as well as help you relax. A few herbal teas to consider drinking during and after pregnancy include:

Ginger Tea - eases nausea, supports digestion and is a good source of zinc (supports your immune system).

Nettle Leaf Tea - good source of vitamins and minerals (iron, potassium, magnesium, & vitamins A, C, & K). It is the safest to consume during the second and third trimester

Raspberry Leaf Tea - traditionally used later in pregnancy to prepare for birth (toning uterine muscles) & breastfeeding. It is high in calcium, magnesium, and iron. It also helps to prevent postpartum hemorrhaging.

Spearmint & Peppermint Tea - eases nausea and vomiting & helps the stomach muscles relax.

Rooiboos Tea - tastes most similar to traditional black tea. It contains calcium, magnesium and lots of antioxidants. It aids with digestion, and can eases renal colic and reflux.
