Feeling Hot Hot Hot!
Summer is in full swing and so is this heatwave. Pregnant momma’s, I can not imagine how uncomfortable the increase in swelling in your hands, ankles, and feet must feel during the summer months. Swelling is a natural response that can occur anytime throughout your pregnancy due to the body producing about 50% more blood and body fluids to support your growing baby.
Wondering what you can do to alleviate the swelling?
1. Limit your sodium intake – it’s important to be mindful of the amount of processed and canned foods that you consume during pregnancy, as they are high in sodium. This can then contribute to extra retention of water in your body.
2. Increase your water intake – yes it sounds counterproductive, but consuming at least ten glasses of water a day will rid the body of toxins and extra fluid that is not needed, while keeping you hydrated. If you’re looking to spruce up your H20; try infusing your water with berries or other fruits of your choice.
3. Elevate your feet and rest – I know what you’re thinking! “I can’t rest, I have so many things to get done before baby arrives”. Although you have a long list of things to get through, it’s important to take care of yourself as well. This means sitting with your feet elevated at the end of the day to help drain the fluid that has been accumulating in your legs over the day.
4. Massage – not only is a massage relaxing, it helps to circulate the fluids that tend to build up in your hands and feet which will then help reduce the swelling. Many massage clinics offer specialized prenatal massages for your comfort and peace of mind.
5. Sleep on your left side- side sleepers, where are you? When possible, sleeping on your left side can help promote blood flow which aids in alleviating the swelling in your feet. Lying on your left side also reduces the pressure from your uterus on your inferior vena cava; a large vessel that returns blood to your heart.
Momma’s you don’t have to suffer, try a few of these tips and soon enough the only feet you’ll be focused on are the tiny toes of your sweet baby.
Happy Friday!
