I like my skincare & make up products like I like my people – nontoxic!
Hey Gorgeous! So, you have just found out you are pregnant and have already started to dread all the potential hormonal related skin changes that you may or may not experience. As daunting as these changes may be, it is also important to keep in the back of your mind that there are many ingredients in cosmetics and skin care products that you should avoid while you are pregnant. Do not despair! I am here to be your one stop beauty guide. As much as I love being a nurse and doula, I am also passionate about all things health and beauty and want to make sure you are feeling safe and confident throughout your pregnancy and beyond.
Did you know, the Food and Drug Administration do not need to approve cosmetics and skin care products that are sold on the market but only require that they be deemed “safe” based on their specific uses and labelling? Taking this into consideration it would not be such a bad idea to err on the side of caution.
Here are a few ingredients that you should be looking out for in your makeup and skincare products to avoid:
Retinol/Retinoids is a derivative of vitamin A and it is also known as retinyl palmitate, retinoic acid, and retinyl acetate. Retinol can be found in many anti-aging serums, creams, foundations, and lipsticks. Studies show that the most common adverse effect of an excessive vitamin A intake include congenital fetal malformations as well as potential early term miscarriages.
Parabens – is a preservative agent that is used in foundations and lipsticks to keep products from growing and harbouring bacteria. Studies have shown that parabens may have an impact on your baby’s fetal and weight development. Parabens also known as propylparaben, butylparaben, isopropylparaben and methylparabens.
Fragrance/Parfum- who knew your favourite fragrance might contain various hazardous substances. Some examples of what might be hiding in your favourite products include phthalates that is associated with reproductive system defects as well as octoxynols that are hormone disruptors.
Bisphenol A (BPA), Diethyl phthalate (DEP), Oxybenzone and Triclosan are also ingredients to beware of in your beauty regimen.
Although there is so many negative ingredients to be on the look out for, there are also many natural beauty products to keep you safe, healthy, and looking your best throughout your pregnancy! Here is a few pregnancy safe products and brands to consider:
I hope you feel more confident in choosing products that are not only natural and great for your skin but also safe to use while pregnant and breastfeeding with your little babe.
