Get to know Me!

Hello Hello!

Sadhna here! Welcome to my Daisy Doula Blog where I bring you easy to understand educational information on all topics related to prenatal and postpartum care. I thought I would take this opportunity as I resurface from the depths of just life getting in the way to reintroduce myself and share my story on why I am so passionate about supporting mama’s, birthing person’s and their families.

I started my journey in healthcare as a Registered Practical Nurse specializing in ambulatory care and mental health about 12 years ago. My drive to connect with others and support their wellness journey led me to focusing my attention full-time on my role as a Forensic Mental Health Nurse for about the past decade. In addition to working within the mental health space I’ve always had an interest in women’s health and specifically prenatal and postpartum care. My shift to wanting to become a postpartum doula with a strong focus on maternal mental health came to light when I came across newly postpartum moms who found themselves facing charges within the forensic criminal justice system. It was an eye-opening experience that led me to researching the gaps within maternity care and connecting with those advocating for a perinatal mental health strategy here in Ontario.

Currently in Canada there is no national perinatal mental health strategy that mandates screening for expecting moms-to-be for maternal mental health illnesses. There continues to be a gap in maternity care when it comes to screening, treatment and interventions. The lack of support that mother’s are receiving throughout this life changing experience is why I want to attempt to bridge the gap and provide that much needed education and support to families to be knowledgeable about perinatal mental health illnesses and identifying when they need to seek further support from their treatment team. I also strive to create a safe space for families to be able to share their vulnerabilities as many mothers/birthing persons may still feel stigmatized to share their struggles during motherhood in fear of judgement.

Here are just a few reasons why you should trust me with supporting you:

-       I am passionate about being able to help support families in feeling confident about their parenting skills without the fear of judgement.

-       I am able to hold space and provide a non-biased approach as I do not have my own parenting or birthing experiences that influence my care.

-       I have many years of experience of working with individuals from all walks of life and understand that everyone’s experiences are unique to them and providing support is more than just a “one size fits all”.

On a personal note when I am not supporting mental health clients in the community and providing excellent doula care and education, you can find me curled up with a good book, at the movie theatres with my newly wedded husband watching the latest Hollywood or Bollywood flick, or spot me at sporting events soaking up all the excitement while supporting my multitalented husband who may or may not be pumping up the crowd.

Curious how I can support you? Book a complimentary discovery call with me here.

Ciao,

Sadhna Bulsara (formerly known as Sadhna Persaud)
